Ubuntu Linux and the Meaning(s) of the Word "Ubuntu"

"Ubuntu" is an African word from the Zulu tribe that has quiet a bit of meaning and is interpreted to have several meanings, interpretations and also represents several "humanistic" concepts.

Ubuntu is considered by some to represent a

social and spiritual philosophy, serving as a framework for African society.

One interpretation of the word is that it means “humanness” - it means something along the lines of "humanity to others" and also means "I am what I am because of who we all are" - and “a person is a person through other persons”.

The word Ubuntu also represents respect and concern for a person's family and neighbors - and respect for a person's ancestors (in a deeper spiritual sense).

The word Ubuntu also refers to an individual as a component of a greater collective whole - and it stresses social consciousness and unity.

Here is a quote from 1999 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the meaning of the word Ubuntu:

"A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed."
