Ubuntu Linux vs. Microsoft Windows - Desktop Similarities - Ubuntu Linux Training
Ubuntu Linux can be installed and run on the same types of computer systems as Microsoft Windows.
When you start an Ubuntu Linux system - or a Windows system - the "desktop" automatically appears and fills the entire screen.
The Ubuntu desktop and the Windows desktop both provide you with
the same easy to use "point-and-click" environment to work in.
If you can work in Windows to run programs and do your work - then you can run programs and work in Ubuntu Linux.
Ubuntu and Windows Desktop Similarities - Running Software Programs from Menus
When you work at the Windows desktop, you click on the famous "Start" menu at the bottom left and then select programs from menu category names, like: Accessories, Creative and Startup.
For example, in Windows, to run Word (the word processor in the Office Suite), you select:
Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, and then select Word
Note: You also click on "Start" - to "Stop" Windows!
Similarly, in Ubuntu, rather than having a single menu heading, like "Start", there are several main menu headings across the top of the desktop and each menu has categories of programs to choose from.
In Ubuntu, there are main program menu headings across the top, like: Applications, Places and System.
Each menu heading at the top, like Applications, has menu category names, like: Accessories, Graphics, Internet, Office, and Sound & Video.
So, in Ubuntu, to run the Writer (word processor in the "Open" Office Suite) just click:
Applications, Office, and then select OpenOffice.org Word Processor

On the Windows desktop, you can run programs by clicking (once) on icons in the "System Tray" across the bottom of the desktop. To run programs from the desktop, you double-click on the program icons that are "on" the desktop.
Ubuntu Linux has "panels" across the top and bottom that work the same as the windows "System Tray".
For example, to run the Firefox web browser in Ubuntu, just click (once) on the Firefox (blue and red circle) icon in the "panel" at the top of the screen.
And he As with Windows, to run a program "on" the desktop in Ubuntu, you just double-click on the icon for the Linux program.
