Ubuntu Linux Version Numbering And Ubuntu Linux Code Names or "Pet Names" - Ubuntu Linux Training

In addition to Ubuntu Linux version numbering, such as a version number of 10.04, for the version number that was released in the

fourth month (April) of 2010, versions Ubuntu Linux are also given "pet names" (animal names) that are the "code names" of the Ubuntu Linux version - used until the version is released (and even after!).

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: People refer to Ubuntu Linux versions by version numbers and they also commonly refer to them by these code names (animal "pet" names) - even though the code names are supposed to be dropped when the OS version is released.

Each Ubuntu Linux version number animal name has a characteristic, such as "gutsy" or "breezy" and then has an animal name, such as hedgehog or heron.

Each word in the two letter code name starts with the same letter, such as "Breezy Badger".

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: The meanings of the words used in the code names of the Ubuntu Linux version numbers give you some insight into the Ubuntu Linux programmers and the Ubuntu Linux community.

Here Are Some Examples of Ubuntu Linux Version Numbers and Animal "Pet" Names:

The first release of Ubuntu Linux was version number 4.10 (October 2004) and it was called Warty Warthog.

As the story goes, "When Robert Collins, upon hearing of the six month release schedule, said "That is going to be pretty warty. Lets call it Warty Warthog. The naming convention stuck."

"Note: The official way to refer to a released version of Ubuntu is by the number, not the name. Thus version 8.04, not Hardy Heron. The transition from being known by a code name to being known by a release number occurs when the Beta release happens. At that point the code name is obsolete."
