Ubuntu Linux Version Numbering and Ubuntu Linux Code Name History
Ubuntu Linux versions have numbers, such as 10.04, for the version number released in the
fourth month (April) of 2010. These version numbers, or release numbers, are also given code names (a.k.a. "pet names", animal names) that are used until the software version is released (and even after!).
Here are other Ubuntu Linux Release Numbers and Code Names:
Release number 4.10 (October 2004) is Warty Warthog. Warty is skin covered with rough lump - and a warthog is a large-headed wild pig with tusks and the male has two warts on its face.
Release number 5.04 (April 2005) is Hoary Hedgehog. Hoary is covered with grayish hair - and a hedgehog is a small mammal with spines on the back and sides.
Release number 5.10 (October 2005) is Breezy Badger. Breezy is fresh, animated and lively - and a badger is a carnivorous burrowing mammal.
Release number 6.06 LTS (June 2006) is Dapper Drake. Dapper means very stylish and neatly dressed - and a drake is a male duck.
Release number 6.10 (October 2006) is Edgy Eft. Edgy means daring, trend-setting and provocative - and an eft is an immature newt (salamander - lizardlike amphibians).
Release number 7.04 (April 2007) is Feisty Fawn. Feisty means full of spirit and showing courage - and a fawn is a young deer.
