Ubuntu Linux - "Standard" Distribution Version Numbers vs. Ubuntu Linux Version Numbers
Most Linux distributions use a version numbering system that is only relevant to that Linux distribution, and the version number for these distributions is completely
meaningless in comparison to the version number of the Linux OS kernel.
For example, at the same point in time, one Linux distribution might be a version 7 and another might be at version 9. And at this same time, both Linux distributions are using the same Linux OS kernel and the Linux kernel version number may be at 3.6.25.10.
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: All Linux distributions use the Linux OS kernel, although the version number of the Linux kernel being used may differ slightly from one distribution to another.
Technically speaking, the word "Linux" actually represents only the Linux OS kernel (only) and not any other open source software components, such as the GNU commands and GNOME or KDE desktops.
All Linux distributions are usually using the same kernel version number (or a Linux kernel version number that is very close to the current kernel version number).
A Linux distribution that has a version number of 7 is not necessarily any "less" of a distribution than a Linux distribution with a version number of 9.
The Linux distribution at version 7 is simply a more advanced version than version number 6 of the same distribution.
Most Linux distributions also included numbers at the right of the main version number, such as using .3 on the end of the version number of 7, to be version number 7.3. Version number 7.3 is a somewhat improved version of version 7.0.
So, in most cases, the version number of a distribution is only useful in relation to that Linux distribution!
