Ubuntu Linux Distribution Version Numbering

Ubuntu Linux is also an innovator in the area of version numbering!

The version number of Ubuntu Linux consists of one or two digits representing the year and then two digits representing the month of the year.

For example, an Ubuntu Linux version number of

10.04 means that this distribution was released in the fourth month (April) of 2010.

The Ubuntu Linux LTS (Long Term Support) versions also have an additional "dot number", such as .1, .2, .3 and .4, which represents an incremental upgrade release.

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: Ubuntu Linux has two general "types" for this Linux distribution.

One type is the standard version, which is revised and released every six months - and the other type is the LTS (Long Term Support) version, which comes out with a new release every two years for the desktop version, and every three years for the server version.

For the LTS versions of Ubuntu Linux, the first "dot number" will represent three months after the first release of a version number and each additional "dot number" release represents an additional six months.

For example, an Ubuntu Linux LTS version number of 10.04.1 is the first upgrade release of version number 10.04 and is released three months after 10.04. The next upgrade release will be 10.04.2 (six months after 10.04.2), and the next "dot number" will be six months after the last, until the next "completely new" LTS version number is released.
