Ubuntu Linux "Live" CD - Easily Try Ubuntu Linux - Just Boot From The Ubuntu Linux CD
Getting The Ubuntu Linux "Live" CD - By Download Or Having It Shipped To You
You can download an Ubuntu Linux "ISO file" so you can burn it to CD and create an Ubuntu Linux CD - from the home page of Ubuntu.com - by clicking on the "Download" link below the "Get Ubuntu" heading.
If you get Ubuntu Linux by downloading the "ISO file", then you need to burn the Ubuntu Linux "ISO file" to CD so that you can
boot into Ubuntu Linux from the CD.
The Ubuntu Linux "ISO file" for CD is about 700 MB and so high speed Internet access is strongly recommended
If you don't have high speed Internet access, or don't want to burn the Linux "ISO file" to CD, you can get the Ubuntu Linux CD delivered to you by clicking beside "Request Free Ubuntu Linux CD" and ordering it here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: A Linux "ISO file" is a single CD "image file" that contains all of the files for the Ubuntu Linux ("live") CD.
When you burn a (single) Linux ISO file to CD, then you can access all the thousands of files "in the (single) ISO file" by booting from the CD or looking at the contents of the CD.
After burning the Linux ISO file to CD you can use this Ubuntu CD to boot into Ubuntu Linux - and at this point you are running Ubuntu Linux "Live" and you're working on the GNOME desktop. Ubuntu Linux is up and running and you can use it to run programs and learn how to use Ubuntu Linux!
And once you're running Ubuntu Linux "Live", you can also install Ubuntu Linux on your hard disk if you want to - by double-clicking on the "Install" icon on the Ubuntu Linux (GNOME) desktop.
Another quick method to get Ubuntu Linux, if you have an existing Windows system that you want to install it on, is to download and install it by using the Wubi (the Windows-based Ubuntu Installer) directly from here:
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: Always back up your system - twice - and be sure you can restore from you backups prior to installing any version of Linux.
The Ubuntu Linux "Live" CD - An Excellent Way To Try Ubuntu Linux Without "Committing"
When you get Ubuntu Linux on CD (by downloading it and burning it to CD, or having a delivered to you), you're actually getting something called a "live" CD.
This is called a "live" CD because you can boot and run Ubuntu Linux "live", entirely from the CD, without having to install it.
When you boot your system from a "live" CD, then Ubuntu Linux automatically starts and runs on your system from the CD. And after booting from CD, the GNOME desktop appears and you can start working in Ubuntu Linux!
At this point, you can work at the GNOME desktop, click on icons to run programs, run programs from menus and access the Internet, and do other work. This is a fantastic and easy way to try Ubuntu Linux without "committing" to installing it on the hard disk in one of your computer systems.
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: When you are running Ubuntu Linux "live" from CD, as opposed to installing it on your hard disk, you can't save any of your work onto the hard disk in your system. There is a way however, to save your work to what is called a zip drive or flash drive.
