The Ubuntu Linux Desktop - Working With Virtual Desktops - Ubuntu Linux Training
Ubuntu Linux has a feature on the desktop called virtual desktops - and by default, you have two virtual desktops that you can work with. These virtual desktops appear in the bottom right corner of the panel.
Linux Training Tips: The panel is a thin border that appears across the bottom of the Ubuntu Linux desktop. This is similar to the System Tray (that has the Start menu on it) in Windows.
And you can even create and work in more
than two virtual desktops if you need to.
Ubuntu Linux Virtual Desktops - Here Are Some Of The Benefits Of Working With Them
Virtual desktops allow you to organize your work. You can organize your work on a virtual desktop by running a series of programs that you're using - to organize the related tasks that you're doing.
A virtual desktop is kind of like having a "window" that shows one Linux desktop at a time. One virtual desktop shows everything that is on the desktop and shows all the programs that are being used on the desktop. And another virtual desktop shows the other programs that you've opened on the other desktop - for a different set of related tasks.
Using Ubuntu Linux Virtual Desktops - Moving Between Virtual Desktop Windows
For example, you can do all your writing and spreadsheet tasks in one virtual desktop and then click on another virtual desktop to have a look at the "window" that shows the contents of that desktop. Once you're on the second desktop, you can run programs to do other related tasks, like create graphics files and music files.
To switch between related tasks, you just switch between virtual desktops!
So, your work becomes organized by the tasks you're doing. You run a set of programs on one desktop that relate to a task and then a different set of programs in a different virtual desktop for a different task.
You'll get the complete details for working with program windows on the Ubuntu Linux desktop in upcoming sections.
