Linux Distributions - Ubuntu Linux And Linux Open Source Software Projects
Linux Software Projects - where the Ubuntu Linux software components come from
As you saw earlier, the Ubuntu Linux distribution is made up of thousands of different free and "open source" software components.
These Linux software components are created in software "projects".
The software programs created by these software projects are written by thousands of
different software developers (programmers) working together over the Internet in different countries all around the world.
For example, the GNOME desktop is a software project that consists of a group of people developing the software for the GNOME desktop and doing other tasks like documenting the software and maintaining the web site.
And the KDE desktop is a different software project that consists of a different group of people creating the KDE desktop.
To learn more about the GNOME desktop project, go to: http://www.gnome.org
And to learn more about the KDE desktop project, go to: http://www.kde.org
You can contribute to Linux projects, including Ubuntu Linux, even if you're not a programmer. You can do things like help create documentation for Linux software programs and assist in giving technical support in Linux forums.

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: "Open Source" software is software that is "open" to being modified by anyone (under certain conditions). It is also free, as in price (often, but not always - anyone is also "free" to charge for it). And it is free, as in freedom.

In order to understand Ubuntu Linux, and the software programs that are shipped with Ubuntu, and the programs that you can use with Ubuntu, you need to understand this concept of "Open Source" software. More on this later.
