Linux Distributions - And The Ubuntu Distribution Software Components
Earlier, we discussed the Linux OS and the GNU / Linux commands and now we're going to cover
the other software components in the Ubuntu Linux distribution.
The GNOME Desktop - gives Ubuntu Linux a "Point-and-Click" GUI Desktop Environment
You can actually use more than one desktop with the Linux OS.
Two of the more popular Linux desktops are the GNOME desktop and KDE desktop.
And when you're using Ubuntu Linux, you are using the GNOME desktop (pronounced "nome - as in a garden gnome, the mythical creature).
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: By default, when you install Ubuntu Linux, you install and use the GNOME desktop.
After installing Ubuntu Linux, you can install another desktop named KDE if you want to. Then when you start your computer system, you can select the desktop that you want to use, either GNOME or KDE.
Alternatively, you can install of version of Ubuntu Linux named Kubuntu - and when you do, the KDE desktop is installed by default, instead of the GNOME desktop. The "K" in Kubuntu in Ubuntu stands for the KDE desktop.
Both the GNOME and KDE desktops are very similar and deciding to use one desktop or the other is mostly a matter of personal preference.
