Learning About Ubuntu Linux and the "Promise" of Ubuntu Linux - Linux Training CDs / Online

One the home page of Ubuntu.com you can see the text in quotation marks below:

"The Ubuntu promise -

1. Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates.

2. Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from Canonical and hundreds of companies around the world.

3. Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community has to offer.

4. Ubuntu CDs contain only free software applications; we encourage you to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on."

I have numbered the points of "The Ubuntu Promise" - and here is my interpretation of the reasons and meanings of the Ubuntu promise.

The four points of the Ubuntu Linux promise are below:

Ubuntu Linux Promise #1. Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates.

A few years ago one of the "major" corporate Linux distributions had both a commercial (paid) version that you could get - and a free version that was available via download. And after several years, they had basically "seeded" the market thousands of companies and people using this Linux distribution.

One day this "major" Linux distribution decided this "business model" wasn't working for them and decided, quite abruptly, to charge for everything.

So, thousands of companies, organizations and other people that already had Linux systems with this Linux distribution installed on it had to either pay up (to be able to get updates, especially security updates) or change to a different Linux distribution!

This caused quite an uproar in the Linux community, but nothing could be done except to pay up or go through the very expensive task of converting Linux systems from one Linux distribution to another.

I believe this is one of the main reasons that Ubuntu Linux makes the promise that it will always be free - as in "no charge" (as well as free, as in freedom).

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: This major Linux distribution still exists and makes millions of dollars every year!
