Getting Ubuntu Linux Help - for Linux Commands with Man Pages - Ubuntu Linux Training
Another way to get help with Ubuntu Linux - when you're running Ubuntu Linux commands - is to use what are called "man pages".
The word "man" in "man pages" stands for manual, as in Linux commands a software manual.
Using Ubuntu Linux Commands To Install Ubuntu Linux Hardware And Software
Sometimes, you may need to run to Ubuntu Linux commands to do things like
set up a piece of hardware for your system, or install some software.
Most of these tasks can be done with some kind of "point-and-click" Ubuntu Linux GUI utility, but it may be much faster to use an Ubuntu Linux command instead.
Getting Help With Ubuntu Linux Commands - Using The man Command
To get help on an Ubuntu Linux command, while working at the Linux command line, you just type in the word man and then the name of the Ubuntu Linux command you want help with.
For example, to get help on the ls command, which is used to list the files and directories in the current directory, you just type in the following and press Enter: man ls
However, unless you already have a good idea of how to use a Linux command, then you'll find man pages overly complex and extremely confusing. The man pages are really only useful if you know how to use a command, and need to know more information about a specific option of the command.
Unfortunately, many technical people that already understand Linux often say something like "just look at the man page" to learn how to use a Linux command. And for someone new to Linux, being constantly referred to the complex and confusing man pages can bring about enough frustration with Linux to want to stop using it altogether!
