Getting the Ubuntu Linux Desktop Edition and the Ubuntu Linux Server Edition for Linux Training

There are basically two versions of Ubuntu Linux, the Desktop Edition and the Server Edition.

The Ubuntu Linux Desktop Edition

The Ubuntu Linux Desktop Edition (version) allows you to run Ubuntu and work at the Ubuntu desktop to run Linux software programs. This allows you to do things like word processing, work on spreadsheets, do email, and surf the Internet - and lots and lots more!

And you can also do some steps that are described in detail later to go from the Linux desktop to a Linux command line prompt and run (Ubuntu) Linux commands to do things like

check your hardware components and also do other "Linux system administration" tasks.

The Ubuntu Linux Server Edition

The Ubuntu Linux server Edition (version) is designed to run various types of Ubuntu Linux servers, and there are lots of Linux servers that can be run, such as the Apache web server, the Samba file server, FTP servers, DNS servers, and many others.

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: You can get the Ubuntu Linux Desktop Edition on CD, or get the Ubuntu Linux Server Editions on CD, but you can't get both editions on the same CD - there just isn't enough room on a single CD.

Getting the Desktop Version of Ubuntu Linux - To Get Ubuntu Linux Training Experience

This Ubuntu Linux Training book focuses on using the Desktop version of Ubuntu Linux (as opposed to the Server version of Ubuntu Linux).

The two Desktop versions of Ubuntu Linux are LTS (Long Term Support) and non-LTS.

At certain points in time, the LTS version is the only desktop version of Ubuntu Linux that is available, and if this is the case, then just select this version. Otherwise select the Desktop version of Ubuntu Linux that is best for you.
