At this screen you will see an option to boot into Windows and an option to boot into Ubuntu Linux.

Just highlight Ubuntu Linux and press Enter!

After a minute or so, the Ubuntu Linux (GNOME) desktop will appear and you can start working in Ubuntu Linux.

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: When you reboot for the first time (only) after installing Ubuntu Linux with the Wubi Installer, and selecting "Ubuntu Linux" from the Windows boot loader menu, you will see lots of

installation activity on the screen and your system will likely reboot again. After this, select the "Ubuntu Linux" option again and this will start the fully functional version of Ubuntu Linux (and the Ubuntu Linux OS, and all it's software components, are actually located in a folder on your Windows system).

Once you're at the Ubuntu Linux (GNOME) desktop, you can do everything you would normally be able to do in Ubuntu Linux, including creating folders (directories), creating data files with Ubuntu Linux software programs, modifying your system settings and creating new users (if necessary).

Ubuntu Linux training Tips: When you install Ubuntu Linux using the Wubi Installer, you can either boot into Windows or boot into Ubuntu Linux. You can't use both operating systems at the same time - whereas you can if you use a virtual machine (such as VMware or Virtual Box) to run Linux in Windows.

Keep this in mind after using the Wubi Installer: When you choose to boot into Ubuntu (instead of booting into Windows), you don't have access to the Windows operating system and can't run any of your Windows software programs - and after using the Wubi Installer you can only run one operating system (either Windows or Linux) at a time.

However, you still have access your Windows data files after booting into Ubuntu Linux. The Windows partition on which you installed Ubuntu Linux (typically your Windows drive C:) is in the /host folder (directory) and if you have any other Windows partitions, such as hard disk drives named D:, E: and so on (that are not CD, DVD, USB, or other drive types) they are in /media.

You can use the Wubi (Windows-based Ubuntu Installer) to download and install Ubuntu Linux in Windows and this is very similar to installing any software program in Windows.

One of the great benefits of using the "Wubi Installer" is that you can also uninstall Ubuntu Linux from

Windows if you need to (in the same way as you uninstall any Windows program).

When you use the "Wubi Installer", you DON'T have to do the following steps (that you would "typically" need to do) to install the Desktop version of Ubuntu Linux on an existing Windows system:

• download a Linux ISO file

• burn the Linux ISO file to a Linux CD

• set up your computer to boot from CD

• boot with the Linux CD to run Linux "Live" and get to the GNOME desktop

• double-click on the "Install" icon to start the installation routine

• run the Ubuntu Linux installation routine

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: The Wubi Installer is only used to install the Desktop (not Server) Edition of Ubuntu Linux on an existing Windows system - and not on a new or used computer system that doesn't have Windows already installed on it.

All of the "download, burn, setup, and so on" steps listed above will be described shortly in upcoming sections. The Ubuntu Linux installation steps described above are required to install the Desktop and Server Editions (versions) of Ubuntu Linux - either on a computer system that has Windows (to create a Dual-Boot Windows / Linux system) or one that doesn't have Windows

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: Keep in mind that prior to installing Ubuntu Linux (or any Linux distro) on an existing Windows system, you need to do a complete backup of your Windows system - twice!

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: You can change the default location that files are downloaded to by modifying the "Options" of the Firefox browser - by selecting the Tools menu and then the Options submenu (in Firefox).

You can also create folders on the Linux desktop to organize your programs and data files. Creating shortcuts in folders - to your commonly used programs and data files - is a great way to quickly access your commonly used programs and data files.

For example, there's a folder on the desktop called Examples that shows you

some neat examples of data files that you can create in Ubuntu Linux.

To open a folder that's on the desktop, you just double-click on it and the contents of the folder appear, such as double-clicking on the Examples folder to see the sample Ubuntu Linux data files.

There are thin strips that appear across the top and bottom of the Ubuntu Linux desktop and these are called panels.

And there are icons in these panels that allow you to run software programs, get help with Ubuntu, and do other tasks and get other information.

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: To run an Ubuntu program from the panel (across the top or bottom) of the Ubuntu desktop, you only click on

the icon for the program once. To run a program from the desktop (that's not on the panel), you need to double click on the icon in the program.

Items In the Top Panel of the Ubuntu Desktop

By default, there are icons in the top panel for the Firefox web browser, an email program, and there's an icon with a question mark on it that you click on to get help with your Ubuntu system.

The panel that is across the top of the Ubuntu desktop also has some other icons it, such as an icon to control the volume of your system and another to shut your system down. It also shows the time and some other information.

Items In the Bottom Panel of the Ubuntu Desktop

At the left of the bottom panel, there is an icon and when you point to it, it says "Desktop". This lets you quickly see the Ubuntu desktop.

For example, let's say you need to click on a folder icon that's sitting on the Ubuntu desktop, but you have some program windows open on the desktop - that are stopping you from seeing the folder icon on the desktop. You can just click on the Desktop icon and you will be able to see the folder icon and double-click on it to open it!

At the right of the bottom panel you can see the "windows" for two virtual desktops and a "Trash" icon - that allows you to get back files that you've accidentally deleted!

Linux Training Tips: The virtual desktops at the bottom right are quite fun to use and work with. And you can create more than two virtual desktops.

The Applications menu has several sub-menus, such as:

Accessories, Games, Graphics, Internet, Office (for the Open Office Suite), Sound & Video

Use the Applications menu to run lots of different types of Linux application software programs, such as: Calculator, Dictionary, Manage Print Jobs, email, browser, sound recorder and music player.

The Applications menu also lets you run the famous

Open Office Suite of programs, such as: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, and Base.

Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: In addition to the Linux application software programs that come installed on an Ubuntu system, you can also install thousands of other Linux programs.

The Places menu lets you look at the files and folders on your Ubuntu Linux desktop system - and on your network server, if you have one - and have "permissions" to access the data files on the server.

And the submenus on the Places menu work just like the Windows folders named: My Documents, My Music, My Pictures And My Videos
