Benefits of the Wubi (Windows-Based Ubuntu Installer) - Wubi, Ubuntu And Windows
There are several reasons why the Wubi (Windows-Based Ubuntu Installer) is one of the best methods of running Ubuntu Linux on an existing Windows system.
Benefits Of Using The Wubi (Windows-Based Ubuntu Installer):
1. The Wubi has been tested and is now officially supported by Ubuntu Linux.
2. The Wubi Ubuntu installer is very simple and easy to use. You can use the Wubi to install Ubuntu Linux on an existing Windows system "over the Internet" (if you have high-speed access) without having to use the Ubuntu Linux CD.
This means that you can install Ubuntu Linux on an existing Windows system without having to:
1. Download Ubuntu Linux, burn it to CD, then boot with the CD, and then use the Wubi to install it Ubuntu Linux.
2. Get a copy of the Ubuntu Linux CD shipped to you.
3. Wubi is safe to use on your Windows system because you don't have to modify your Windows hard disk settings, use any other special software - and uses the existing Windows boot loader.
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: Even though it's supposed to be "safe", always back up your Windows system - twice - programs and data - before installing Ubuntu Linux on Windows - when using the Wubi Ubuntu Installer - or any other method of installing Ubuntu Linux on an existing Windows system.
4. You can use the existing Windows boot loader to run Ubuntu Linux on an existing Windows system - as opposed to using just the Linux GRUB boot loader.
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: A boot loader is used to start an OS, such as Windows or Linux. Windows has its own boot loader referred to as the Windows boot loader (surprisingly) and Linux uses the GRUB boot loader.
5. The existing Windows boot loader is used to start Ubuntu Linux as opposed to using the default GRUB boot loader - which is used in place of the Windows boot loader on a dual-boot Windows / Ubuntu Linux system.
Ubuntu Linux Training Tips: When you create a Windows / Ubuntu Linux dual-boot system, the default GRUB boot loader is installed in place of the Windows boot loader. And there is no easy way to uninstall GRUB and get the Windows boot loader back - in case something goes wrong with the Ubuntu Linux installation, or you don't want to use Ubuntu Linux on the system any more.
This can be a HUGE trap that can render your Windows system completely useless - and then it's time to re-install everything - the Windows OS, programs, and restore your data files from backup!
6. Wubi is organized in one folder in Windows (mostly), so it's easy to keep track of and easy to remove if needed.
7. After installing Ubuntu Linux with the Wubi, you can easily uninstall Ubuntu Linux in the same way as you uninstall any Windows program. This is far superior to using the "old style" dual-boot Windows / Ubuntu Linux installation that uses the grub boot loader and cannot be easily uninstalled.
8. Wubi is FOSS (free open source software) - it's free - can you believe it!
Here's a quote about Wubi from InfoWorld: "Installation itself may be Hardy Heron's biggest revelation. This Ubuntu Linux release offers a new, optional installation utility called Wubi, which promises to lower the barrier to entry considerably."
